Week 2 of our pre-season and we’re diving into setting our expectations for the season!
If we get it right, cricket season can be amazing. If we don’t, it can be a LOT! So, here are some tips to help the season run smoother and keep us from feeling frustrated.
1. Have One Thing in Your Week That’s Just Yours
Now, I don’t have kids, so I won’t pretend to know all the ins and outs of that life. But I do play in a sports team with loads of mums who absolutely cherish their time each week to play their sport.
It doesn’t have to be sport, though! It could be a walk, a coffee date, or a catch-up with friends. It’s your time! Your chance to breathe fresh air, enjoy a bit of silence, or vent with your bestie.
I may not have kids, but I feel it if I miss my weekly check-in with my bestie. Living with T can be a lot sometimes, haha!
What I’m saying is, if you make this time part of your routine instead of a “maybe,” everyone knows the plan. It can become a non-negotiable part of your summer.
You might not even realize you need it, but once you have it, you won’t want to be without it!
2. Don’t Rely on the Weekends for Everything!
If you can grasp this, you’re onto a winner!
I’ve always struggled with this, and I’m still working on it.
In simple terms, if we can’t have date night on a Saturday, what’s stopping us from having it on a Thursday?
It doesn’t have to be a “date night.” Just carve out a slot for some quality time during the week.
During the season, we try to keep Friday nights free for just us. But when you don’t live together, one slot a week isn’t really enough. Well, it might be for T, haha, but not for me!
So, we’re trying to make Wednesday nights our “tea and film/series night.” Or even a FaceTime with our old overseas buddy, Benji! Nothing fancy—just a time when we’re actually eating together and tuned into the same thing. Instead of both being caught up in our own chaos and admin.
It might not be perfect, and it’ll probably get interrupted by softball practice come May, but for now, it’s a slot—and we’re rolling with it!
3. Talking of Softball...
It’s not too late to plant the seed at your club that you’d like to start a team or join one that’s already there.
Here’s the thing: you don’t have to start straight away. It doesn’t have to fully align with the English cricket season. We start in May, and it’s too cold before then anyway!
You also don’t need to commit to a full season. You could do a six-week block.
You don’t need to have matches; it could just be fun training sessions at the club.
You don’t need to enter a league; you could just arrange friendlies.
But if you do want to join a league, they’re often really accommodating and will try to fit you in.
What’s great about softball is:
You don’t need any experience.
You don’t need to have played before.
You don’t need to wear protective equipment (because it’s a soft ball!).
Honestly, you’ll know more than you think—you’ve watched enough of it! You’ll be a tactical queen.
It only takes one person to get the ball rolling, and that could be you.
You won’t realize yet how much of a positive impact just getting it going could have on so many other women around you.
So, go for it!!
This is our summer too! We’re living the cricket season but not losing ourselves in it!
