The last cricket-free weekend has been and gone guys.. hate to break it to you!
A couple of you may have 1 or 2 more, but even if you don’t have a game I am sure you will end up at the club at some point.. or even better another team’s game/club phahah!
Our pre-season games start this weekend and not just 1 but 2.. so yeah, starting the 2026 season with a double header! I feel like that should be illegal in April!
And you will also know it gets better, because it’s April so it will be a covers on then off kind of weekend, and the result actually doesn’t matter yet we will sit there till 5/6 o’clock anyway! Fabulous!

I know that the weather will be covers on and off, and I should be able to tell you the exact precise timing of the rain because I have heard it more than 5 times today alone!
I completely forgot about the number of different weather apps that get referred to every week and also how much of the conversation refers back to how this will affect the game’s play.
Advice for this weekend.. maybe it’s not the one to start on. If the weather isn’t looking great, maybe pop down for a little bit, but if you are new to cricket this year don’t take this weekend as your introduction to cricket. Wait till the sun is shining and pitch up for the day. If you are heading to the boundary don’t get caught out. Even if the sun peeps through the clouds it probably still feels like -1 degrees, so make sure the layers, coats and blankets are packed!
What are we taking to the game?
Some of you will be very seasoned CWs, but I always get asked what do you take?… and one thing is for sure, you will feel really, really silly but you can never pack too much! Rather than packing a bag, treat your car boot as the bag!
Some clubs have benches and chairs, but if you want to be comfy for 10 hours sat on the boundary you need to invest in a comfy chair. Everyone likes a different style of camping chair, but one top tip is make sure it has a drinks holder haha!
Food. Pack the coolbox up with lots of snacks. One thing I always like to do is pack a really decent picnic because if you are doing it every weekend, or even both days of the weekend, you start to feel really rubbish if you’re always eating rubbish. Take the time in the morning or the night before to pack yourself a decent day’s food. Otherwise you end up eating really late, not at all, or something you don’t want. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes you might want a nice treat but you won’t want it two days on the trot. So be prepared! Bottle of water too.. easily forgotten but you’ll thank me for that one.
Now things you may as well leave in the car all summer because you will need them at some point and you’ll be grateful you have them in the car as a standard:
• Umbrella
• Blanket
• Extra layers
• Picnic blanket
• Big coat/waterproof
Basically you never really know what the day’s going to bring. It can be all four seasons in one day and it’s better to be ready for whatever gets thrown at you!
Next, your essentials. I always find a little essentials bag is quite good for if you have to get up to go for food, the toilet or for a lap. You don’t want to pack everything up and at the same time don’t have your eyes on your keys, phone, money, sunglasses etc. for the whole time and sometimes you just can’t relax. I do believe cricket clubs are friendly, honest places but you can never be too careful. So to save you being on edge, all it takes is a small bag to sling over your shoulder with all your belongings in just to grab whenever you move.
Lastly, your The Cricket Widow Club cap haha.. for two reasons. Number 1 we are committed to the CW role and Number 2 we are flying the flag for the CWs this year, our little club, our little place of belonging!
Ooops I nearly forgot.. pack the wine guys.. PACK THE WINE!
The maybes and might-bes are back!
Can we book a table for Saturday night if it’s going to rain most of the afternoon?… MAYBE
Well don’t you think if it’s a friendly it will probably be called off earlier if it’s raining to protect the square?.. MIGHT BE
You get my drift haha..
So this is something I don’t miss and it happens overnight and I am like ahhh great, this is back and how it’s going to be for the next 6 months. I get used to it but it does take me a few weeks to get my head round it again. I try to squeeze it every year and push it but they do win and you can’t fight it or you are disappointed. So advice.. avoid it. You almost have to train yourself out of asking and hoping again. That sounds really harsh. But basically, to avoid that disappointed sinking feeling, plan other nights, other slots and stay away from those moments that even when you’re asking you know what the answer is going to be.
Don’t fight it, save yourself and you will ultimately be happier.

You got this (or we got this)!!
I am wishing you all a very happy start to the season. I am currently writing this sat solo on the settee as training has now increased to two nights a week.. something I also hadn’t twigged.
But just remember this season you are not alone with any of it. You are going to have ups and you are going to have downs.. but this year we are trying to minimise these lows as a team of women and girls. We are going to celebrate the wins together, laugh at the downright stupid stuff that happens to us in a week and not forget that no moment which makes us feel a bit shit is too small. The other CWs at your club are there for you, the women and girls in the CW club are there for you and I am here for you too!
We are in this together and we are going to make this season the best one yet!
You got this!
Lots of love,
Liv
